Adsorption Principle

Gas separation by adsorption systems is based on the principle of adsorption, wherein various components of a gas mixture are fixed by a solid substance known as an adsorbent. This phenomenon occurs due to the interaction between gas and adsorbent molecules.

Technology

Pressure Swing Adsorption

The flow process of the oxygen plant is arranged such that highly absorbable gas mixture components are taken in by the adsorbent, while low absorbable and non-absorbable components pass through the plant. Currently, there are three methods of arranging the adsorption-based air separation process using swing technologies: pressure swing adsorption (PSA), vacuum swing adsorption (VSA), and mixed swing adsorption (VPSA).

In pressure swing adsorption flow processes, oxygen is recovered under above-atmospheric pressure, and regeneration is achieved under atmospheric pressure. In vacuum swing adsorption flow processes, oxygen is recovered under atmospheric pressure, and regeneration is achieved under negative pressure. Mixed systems operate by combining pressure variations from positive to negative.

Temperature and Pressure Influence

The current methods of producing gaseous oxygen from air using adsorption technology have nearly been perfected. The operation of a modern oxygen adsorption plant relies on the dependence of gas intake by the adsorbent on the temperature and partial pressure of a gas component. Consequently, the processes of gas adsorption and adsorbent regeneration can be regulated by varying the pressure and temperature parameters.
